There are many types of discharge in the vagina. The following types are categorized based on their color and the amount of discharge. You will notice that some types of discharge are normal, while others are not safe and may indicate the presence of a disease.
1. White Vaginal Discharge:
White discharge, especially at the beginning or end of the menstrual cycle, is normal. However, if this discharge is accompanied by itching and is thick like milk, it is not normal. It requires testing and treatment at the hospital as it may indicate a vaginal yeast infection.
2. Watery Discharge:
A watery discharge is entirely normal and can occur at any time during your menstrual cycle, especially after exercise.
3. Egg White-like Stretchy Discharge:
If you notice light, stretchy discharge similar to egg whites, it indicates ovulation—the fertile period when the egg is ready for fertilization. This type of discharge is normal.
4. Brown Discharge with Blood:
If you experience brown discharge before your period and engaged in unprotected sex, there is a possibility of pregnancy. If this discharge occurs when the pregnancy is still early, it may indicate a potential miscarriage, and you should seek medical attention promptly.
In rare cases, brown discharge with blood can be an indicator of cervical cancer or the presence of growths such as fibroids in the uterus. This is why it is crucial to undergo ultrasound examination if you observe unusual symptoms like these.
5. Yellow or Green Discharge:
Yellow or green discharge with a foul odor is not normal. This type of discharge indicates a sexually transmitted infection. It requires immediate medical attention for testing and treatment.
